Frequently Asked Questions

Karate Rochester NYBelow you will find answers to our most frequently asked questions. However, if you have additional questions, please call or contact us at any time and we will be happy to help you.

Q: What is Tae Kwon Do and how is it different from other martial arts?
A: The martial arts were developed thousands of years ago as forms of self-defense. Tae Kwon Do is native to Grandmaster Jeon’s homeland of Korea. Other martial arts include Karate, which originated in Japan, and Kung Fu, which originated in China. In terms of technique, Tae Kwon Do emphasizes kicks more than most other martial arts, making it ideal for improving balance, flexibility, and endurance.

Q: At what age can children begin Tae Kwon Do?
A: We find that our youngest students are the quickest in picking up many of the elements of Tae Kwon Do. Starting at age five, your child can participate in our trial lesson program, which allows our instructors to work with them on a one-on-one basis and evaluate their readiness for group classes.

Q: Does Tae Kwon Do increase aggressiveness?
A: Absolutely not! From the very first lesson, your child will be taught that a true “Tae Kwon Do kid” never misuses their martial arts skills. Instead of developing an uncontrolled aggressive nature, they will learn and foster self-discipline and self-control. The instructors at Grandmaster Jeon’s will continually educate your child that Tae Kwon Do is a form of exercise and self-improvement, not a tool for bullying.

Q: Can I take classes with my child?
A: Yes. In fact, many families are finding Tae Kwon Do to be the perfect family activity, combining an exciting workout with a new learning experience. You have your choice of attending children’s or adult classes individually, or coming together to our family class. Either way, you will have a great time and create a special family experience for all involved.

Q: How safe is Tae Kwon Do to learn?
A: Tae Kwon Do is safe and fun for students of all ages and physical abilities. Classes are taught by expert instructors who demonstrate techniques in a step-by-step manner and help each student learn at their own pace. A thorough stretching routine, matted flooring, and protective safety equipment are all part of our commitment to ensuring student safety.

Q: What if I have never done Tae Kwon Do before or currently out of shape?
A: At Grandmaster Jeon’s World Tae Kwon Do Center, beginners are always welcome. Our open enrollment policy and special trial program makes it easy for new students of all fitness levels to get started. First time students receive one-on-one instruction designed to answer common questions and provide an introduction to the basics of Tae Kwon Do. In addition, the belt system used in Tae Kwon Do allows all students to train at their own pace and improve their physical condition gradually.
